INVESTORS have a variety of properties to choose from as auctions get under way this year. Fitzroys will auction two sites – a Prahran retail outlet leased to a Thai massage business, and a two-level retail/office/residential building at 509 Spencer Street, West Melbourne.

Both go to auction on Friday, February 24: the Thai outlet at 188 Chapel Street at 1pm on site, and the Spencer Street building at 3pm on site.

The Prahran business has annual rental of $68,378, with annual 4 per cent increases. The Spencer Street building is offered with vacant possession, with planning approval for a multi-unit development of four one-bedroom apartments and a ground floor retail/office space.

In South Melbourne, 23 Palmerston Crescent will be auctioned at 1pm on March 1 through Lemon Baxter. The two-storey concrete office building with a first-floor balcony was completed in June 1987 and refurbished in 2000.

The building will be offered with a one-year lease to Hickory Construction, which starts from July 1 at an annual rent of $80,000 net.

Investors will need at least $1.5 million when a boutique investment in Hawksburn Village comes up for grabs on March 7. The property at 588 Malvern Road, Hawksburn, is being auctioned by gross Waddell at 1pm on site.

It is leased to Studio MG, which has been a tenant for more than nine years at an annual rental of $85,000. The single-storey, brick Victorian terrace has a building area of 100 square metres and a rear courtyard of 45 square metres.

The lease expires in August 2014.

Last week, we wrote about a startup called Paddle8, which raised $4 million from Founder Collective in an attempt to marry an “online destination for both beginner and veteran collectors to access fine art works” with a transaction platform that looks to automate (from top to bottom) the purchase, sale, and shipping of fine art.

Albeit niche, it is an interesting play, for the very reason that, while there has been growing interest among investors and entrepreneurs in luxury brands and disruptive ideas targeting this niche, lucrative market, the fine art space has remained largely outside of the reach of technological innovation and disruption.

As the art world and the market for fine art and collectible items have becoming increasingly international, one would think digital platforms and technology would help speed their growth, open up new markets, and make transactions more seamless. after all, eBay was founded in the mid-90′s. when one looks to the international scene to find the prime movers of tech-based platforms, one of the names that surfaces is Saffronart.

Saffronart was founded in 2000, taking a page from eBay’s book, as an online auction house — yet one that specializes in modern and contemporary Indian art. Almost immediately, the company found an audience, quickly selling $125K worth of fine art. Despite some bumps along the way (the global financial crisis in 2008 wreaked havoc on the art market), Saffronart has grown to be the largest fine-art auction house in India, online or otherwise, and one of the largest online fine art auction platforms in the world.

Its model has been successful enough to make it recently became the subject of a Harvard Business School case study and prompted art auction giants Sotheby’s and Christie’s to jump into the Asian market.

Since “officially” launching in 2001, Saffronart has come to deal not only in fine art, but jewelry, watches, collectibles, and even homes. The online auction house has played a role in some of the largest online art auction sales, as COO Nish Bhutani tells us that it (by all accounts I could verify) set the global record for highest value for a single piece of artwork auctioned on the Web — a $2.2 million canvas in 2010, and one of the highest auction bids placed via a mobile app ($1 million in 2011), along with a $235K purchase via the company’s mobile app in 2010.

For Saffronart’s main auction events, which are 2-day auctions offering 100 or so works on sale, the average per-transaction value of artworks is between $40K and $100K. and, as indicated in the prior statistics, a big part of the company’s success has been that its auction platform includes both a web experience as well as for mobile devices, as it offers apps for iPhone, BlackBerry, and iPad. Saffronart re-launched its iPad app a few days ago. (Auctions are held entirely on the Web, too, in case there’s any confusion there.)

Back in 2007, seeing some good early traction, Saffronart raised $12 million from Sequoia and Baer Capital, which the COO said was instrumental in allowing it to survive the financial downturn. Part of Saffronart’s appeal to investors was the alternative it was provided to physical auction houses through place-shifting — in other words, as the art market becomes more global and as buyers pop up across the world, success in the market requires businesses to cater to all locations by way of live bidding from mobile devices, etc.

What’s more, although its auctions are 24 or 48 hour events, Saffronart thinks it provides an advantage to bidders located in different time zones, who get to experience the convenience of being able to log in and bid over an extended period of time, versus the traditional 3-hour timeframe of physical auctions.

Being on the Web also benefits users in that they can find out more about Saffronart itself as well as objects being sold, view catalogs, register to bid, etc. There’s that and the ability to offer a higher level of transparency than physical action houses, including comparable prices, additional charges (commissions, shipping, etc.), and dynamic updating based on current bid values, shipping destinations, and all that good stuff.

Offering digital service also allows Saffronart to be more nimble, enabling them to experiment and move quickly. for example, in the past few months, the startup has increased the number of auctions they offer as well as new selling mechanisms, like “absolute auctions,” which have no reserve prices and bidding starts at $100, even for artworks worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Which brings us to the announcement the company is making today. Saffronart has been, up to this point, solely focused on the sale of Indian fine art, watches, and other luxury items. While it has become the largest online auction platform for fine art in India, 40 percent of sales come from outside India. Of course, the majority of that 40 percent is driven by Indians living overseas.

Saffronart has had offices in New York and London for years now, and plenty of international buyers, but the company has never offered Western art in its auctions. Today, the company announced its entry into Western art with an inaugural auction of impressionist and modern art pieces — a first for India. The auction offers works from Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, and more in a total of 73 lots and includes paintings, drawings, and sculptures.

Western art obviously represents a big strategic push for Saffron to further expand its reach into international markets, and Bhutani says that the company plans to ramp up these kinds of Western art auctions in the near future.

AN ESTATE agent is launching an eBay-style on-line auction which it says will cater for the growing market in amateur investors wanting to snap up cheaper properties.

Whitegates, of Hanley, has set up theproperty auctions.co.uk where sellers can advertise their properties for free and the buyer pays a small reservation fee, based on a percentage of the final sale price, to the agent. Vendors are able to set a minimum reserve price, which allows them to be in complete control of the process, and they can log onto the site and track the activity on their house, seeing how many watchers and bids their property is receiving and making the sales process completely transparent.

On a Saturday afternoon on the site of the old King’s Lynn Cattle market – acquired by ACA founder Lynn George for the family’s general car auction business only a relatively few years ago and which, nowadays, is at the heart of a bustling commercial estate – there were buyers for both US Ford Thunderbird Convertibles. For £18,900 was available for a Fifties 312ci V8 of 1956 manufacture and £14,175 for an even more Sixties 390ci V8 from 1961. a seriously mint 1980 RS 2000 with 2.1 Burton Stage 3 motor and wide wings meanwhile cost a new owner here a sonically rorty £9660.

Two Ferrari prices were logged, albeit both ‘chops’, a 1980 308 GTS 2-Seater converted by Daytona in 1989 from Targa-top into a Spyder at £15,435 and a 1979 400 4-Seater de-roofed by Banham into a Convertible at £10,080. a 1968 Lancia Flavia 1.8 Convertible with wires, but without MOT cost £4515 and, equally rare now the Iron Curtain has rusted away, a 1965 Skoda Octavia Saloon went for £1575.

A well packed hall watched a 1956 Triumph TR2 on wires with overdrive, later engine and disc brakes make £14,490, more than the guide price, and a three owners since 1949 Triumph 2000 Roadster, restored in 1973, a just over estimate £14,280. The top-priced MG was a restored 1960 a 1600 Fixed Head on wires sold for a less than forecast £8295 followed by a 1970 C GT with Webasto-roof for £7140, within the estimate band.

Public valuations for Morris Minors here were led by a 1956 Pick-Up, which had been treated to a 6-years rebuild and raised £7350, £2350 above top estimate. An only just below forecast £5250 was acceptable for a 1968 Traveller with most panels and all woodwork renewed and £2415, mid-estimate money, bought a 1964 Minor 1000 2-Door Saloon.

Some of the other results which registered on your reviewer’s screen – 1991 Caterham 7 Supersprint with de Dion rear end, and free from stone-chips having been nicely repainted too, at £9817; still futuristic looking 1952 Austin Atlantic Saloon for less than expected £8400; 1963 Sunbeam Alpine Series 3 with hardtop and fresh retrim £6090; 2-owner 1948 Alvis TA14, previously restored but from long-term storage, £5145; Ruddspeed-converted 1966 Volvo 122S historic rally car with roll-cage £5040; externally refurbished 1947 Rover P2 16HP £4935; 1 owner 1969 Vauxhall Victor FD 1.6 £1995; 1955 Austin A50 for re-commissioning £1680; and apparently presentable 1977 Reliant Scimitar GTE 3.0, manual with overdrive, £995.

There were also takers for four of the static projects lined up outside in the compound, where, apart from the 90 cars displayed inside, another 50 entries can be accommodated in summer month sales – a time warp 1938 Humber 12 from circa 30 years storage being taken on for £1125; a 1957 Standard 8 with some bubbling below repaint for £975; a distressed and damaged 1982/3 Lotus Eclat 2+2 4-Seater for £475; and a 1971 Morris Minor 2-Door for £275.

Having sold 377 or 70% of the 539 classics offered in 5 sales last year (the 12.6% by lot achieved nationally during 2011 being up from the 8.7% of the previous year), ACA once again have a 5 fixture calendar scheduled for 2012, during which in his role as valuer Rob will again clock up some 40,000m consigning vehicles. The next batch of classics will be driven through the ACA auction hall from 1pm Saturday 31 March.

For the 5th consecutive year, Gooding sold the most valuable car – a $4.62m 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL ‘Alloy’ Gullwing with all numbers matching – during Arizona auction week in the US, where despite unemployment being at a postwar high, 17 world record prices were paid at 6 sales in a $184m+ collector car bonanza. last year at this fest for the seriously addicted, $160m worth of classic metal changed hands 

13 of the record valuations were established during the Gooding bash at Scottsdale where 116 of the 118 top cars, a 98% sale rate, sold for $39.8m, in itself a record gross for the house at Scottsdale. Indeed, 7 cars fetched more than a million dollars apiece, including a 1959 Ferrari 250GT LWB California Spider sold for $3.905m, a 1930 Duesenberg Model J Disappearing-Top Convertible Coupe by Murphy for $2.64m and a 1929 Bentley 4½-Litre Dual Cowl Sports Tourer for $2.145m. Led by a 1932 Packard Twin six 905 Coupe Roadster sold for $770,000, four of the six exceptionally restored Packards from the estate of Thomas a Moretti also achieved auction record status, collectively realising $2.662m.

A 1967 Ferrari 275GTB/4 raised $1.2m and a 1965 500 Superfast from the same marque $1.1m under the gavel of auctioneer Charlie Ross. $1.1m was also invested in a 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV here, whilst a 1971 Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS Spyder attracted $880,000, a 1956 Lancia Aurelia B24S Cabrio $561,000 and a 1969 Iso Grifo 7-Litre $352,00, new record prices for all three models.

BIDDERS FROM 21 COUNTRIES BUY 89% OF RM CARS FOR $25.66m

RM also bucked the uncertain economic reality Stateside by selling 126 or 90% of the 140 cars in what was their 13th auction catalogue in Phoenix for $22.5m to bidders from 21 different countries. to great applause, the top seller at the Arizona Biltmore Resort was a $1.815m 1957 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Coupe that had been uniquely bodied by Scaglietti.

Among other Modenese horses that pranced well here, an F40 Berlinetta with less than 300 miles that was supplied new in 1991 to auto executive Lee Iacocca achieved a record $781,000, while a 1973 365GTB/4 Daytona Spyder offered for the first time in 23 years brought $990,000 and a serial award winning 1963 250GT Lusso Berlinetta realised $979,000.

Also performing strongly at the RM sale were a beautifully restored 1959 BMW 507 Roadster for which $990,000 was available, a low mileage 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster sold for $880,000 and a concours-quality 1958 Porsche 356A 1600 Speedster which made an exceptional $335,500.      

FOUNDING HOUSE BARRETT-JACKSON BEAT ALL PREVIOUS STATS

For Barrett-Jackson, incredibly, this was their 41st staging of a January auction HELD in the desert just outside Scottsdale, in what is claimed to be the largest auction marquee in the world and which was open for drive-through business for a marathon 8 days!

And this year, B-J report that their 270,000 attendance figure, which included petrolheads Jay Leno and Alice Cooper, was up by 16% on the 2011 gate, 50% of their registered bidders were new to their database and, more importantly for them and market confidence, the $92m gross spent by those bidders was 32% more than last year’s takings.

Their big number sellers in the Westworld tent were headed by a 1948 Tucker Torpedo from the Ron Pratte Collection which raised $2.915m, a record price for a Tucker. Among other notable prices here, 1947 Bentley MkVI by Franay at $2.75m, 1954 M-B 300SL Gullwing with only 4159m on the clock $2.2m, 1933 Pierce-Arrow ‘Silver Arrow’ Saloon $2.2m, 1954 de Soto Adventurer II Coupe ‘Concept Car’ by Ghia $1.43m, 1928 Daimler P150 Vee-Front Royal Limo $1.155m, 1930 Isotta Fraschini Cabrio $1.1m, 1930 Duesenberg J $1.045m and ultra-rare ‘K Code’ 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 Custom 2-Door Hardtop $1m.

NEW KIDS ON ARIZONA AUCTION BLOCK BONHAMS SELL STARS CARS

Making their debut at these Arizona sales, where they had set up their rostrum at Scottsdale, were Bonhams, who shifted 45 cars, 68% of the 66 entered, for $6.67m. Their top sellers at the Westin Kierland Resort were a $700,000 1929 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Sedan by Murphy and a well documented 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet C, which mobilised fierce bidding from all over the world until sold for $667,000 to a European buyer. whilst the ex-Marlene Dietrich 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Transformable Phaeton achieved its top estimate to sell for $524,000.

A Chevrolet L88 Corvette roared to a $687,500 conclusion, $100,000 more than the existing record, to establish a new high at auction for the model during the 5 day Russo & Steele extravaganza, which grossed $18.2m at Scottsdale and where, thankfully, at least the tent stayed firmly on the ground and did not blow away this year. For yet another world record valuation in public auction was claimed by CEO Drew Alcazar and team for a 1967 Ferrari 330GTC sold for $429,000 – and both a 1953 Noland Adams Corvette Convertible and a 1965 Shelby GT350 ‘R’ reportedly made $467,500 apiece.

Over at Fort McDowell, where a $87,000 1960 Facel Vega HK500 headlined, Silver sold another $2.95m of less expensive kit. So by the end of an overloaded week of frenzied activity in the winter sunshine, a jaw-dropping $184m had been exchanged for collector automobiles, $24m than last year.

Three former Manheim Auto Auction executives are opening a wholesale auto auction on part of the former Yellow Freight property.

ABC Lancaster Auto Auction is due to begin operating in March on 40 acres at 1040 Commercial Ave., East Petersburg.

It will be part of the Auction Broadcasting co. system, which explains the ABC at the beginning of its name.

The local auction will cost $3 million to develop and will create 75 jobs, according to an announcement Tuesday.

“We’ve done a lot of business with a lot of people. Hopefully, they’ll remember us,” said Greg Gehman, general manager.

Gehman, 57, of East Hempfield Township, spent more than 19 years at Manheim, including more than 18 years as its general manager.

Joining him on the ABC Lancaster Auto Auction management team are Ron St. Denis, assistant manager, and Bob Slade, office manager.

St. Denis had been director of Internet operations at Manheim. Slade had been assistant general manager.

Plans call for Thursday afternoon auctions for dealers only.

Initially, ABC Lancaster Auto Auction will operate a four-lane auction house inside an existing 16,000-square-foot structure.

The building had been used by Yellow Freight for truck maintenance.

ABC Lancaster Auto Auction also will use the building for reconditioning vehicles and for preparing condition reports to be used by online buyers.

The four-lane auction house soon will be replaced, however, by an eight-lane auction house.

It will be part of a new 29,000-square-foot building that will contain offices and a cafeteria as well.

The eight-lane auction house is set to be ready in midsummer.

Tuesday’s announcement provides the first detailed description of the auction coming to the property, recently acquired by Lancaster County Motors’ owners.

As previously reported, Lancaster County Motors’ owners last year obtained zoning changes for the entire 55-acre Yellow Freight property.

The owners said they would move their Mercedes-Benz dealership from Commerce Drive to the parcel’s Manheim Pike side.

The $6 million dealership is due to open by year-end.

They also said they would bring a wholesale auto auction to the balance of the property, but the operator was not revealed at that time.

ABC Lancaster Auto Auction is leasing its section of the tract from the Lancaster County Motors’ owners, who bought the tract under the name 5100 Main Realty LP.

Although ABC Lancaster Auto Auction will have about a fourth as many lanes as Manheim, the world’s largest car auction site, Gehman was optimistic that it will fare well.

Not only are he and his colleagues well known in the industry, but the facility has a prime location, near Routes 30 and 283, and in the middle of “Dealers Row” on Manheim Pike.

New- and used-car dealers will be prime sources of vehicles for the auction, Gehman said. so will lenders, fleet-leasing companies and car-rental firms.

Gehman is a New Holland native and graduate of Garden Spot High School and Franklin & Marshall College.

He and St. Denis are minority partners in the local auction, with Auction Broadcasting co. being the majority owner.

Auction Broadcasting co., founded in 2000, has seven other locations, all in the Midwest or Southeast. the closest to Lancaster is in Toledo, Ohio.

Somebody brought a horse to the parking lot of a Walmart store in South Russell, Ohio, two months ago, tied him to a fence and left, apparently hoping that some horse lover would take pity and bring him home. Store employees named him Wally and took care of him, according to an AP report, until the humane society took over and put him up for adoption. (The cost of oats must be going up.)

A matter of national pride: 262 people in Dublin, Ireland, recently set the Guinness world record for the largest gathering of people dressed up as leprechauns. Derek Mooney of Ireland’s RTE Radio one explained it this way: “We believe that the record for leprechauns belongs on (Ireland’s) native soil, and we’re really pleased to bring it back to Ireland.” he didn’t mention who held the record previously. A Fayette County, Pa., jury recently bought 67-year-old Alberta Kelley’s story — to which she is sticking — that a passing stranger gave her some “flower seeds” to enhance her garden, and she planted them thinking they’d look nice next to her tomatoes. When they grew into seven healthy, 4-foot-tall marijuana plants, according to a WTAE-TV report, police busted her on drug charges. she was apparently disappointed at the lack of blossoms (and was quoted as saying that, to her, “weeds are weeds”).
